Penfolds Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro750mL Bottle, $61.99
Not noted aromatically on 19/6/19, but certainly immediately tasted - earthy Barossa elements abound, coupled with earlier detected savoury red meats. An agglomerate of assorted tannin shapes derived from the trio of shiraz, grenache and mataro set the textural stage – in parallel with a juicy/fruity succulence. A deconstructed Massaman Thai curry accompaniment – direct from the recipe book: cardamom, cinnamon, clove, star anise, cumin, bay leaf and nutmeg. All three varieties carry their weight, all three generously add to the mix. Penfolds Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro750mL Bottle, $61.99
Unashamedly ‘dry-reddish’. And why not? A ferric, rust earthiness coupled with an assortment of fruits – dates, fresh figs and prosciutto/melon. Rounded, with minimal oak impact - as expected. Texture? Within the context of tannins/acidity/extract - ‘slippery’ rather than blocky, grippy.

Alcohol Volume: 14.50%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 8.6

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Barossa Valley

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 750mL Bottle, $53.99
Nose: Full-flavoured, endowed with a concentrated fruit spectrum of citrus, grapefruit and white peach. Hints of sherbet, camomile and goats cheese complex the aromatic offer – a chardonnay cast assembled from three States of Australia. Certainly, there’s quite the performance happening in the glass, with barely a swirl of the glass and some air required to light up the stage! Palate: First and foremost, this wine extolls freshness, yet not at the expense of an endearing richness and generosity of flavour. Whilst some may perceive it to be slightly ‘larger-framed’ than in previous years it nevertheless retains trademark Bin 311 mineral acidity and linearity. Rockmelon and white peach fruits are pronounced. Underlying sherbet and fresh lemon tart impressions coupled with a lovely creaminess add to the structural and flavour pool. A trademark Penfolds phenolic grip certainly doesn’t curtail length or volume. Yes, proactively rich, fresh and assertive! Drinkability? Do we have to wait?!

Alcohol Volume: 13.00%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 7.7

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Adelaide Hills

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 750mL Bottle, $55.99
Nose: Fresh and inviting – complexed by yeast lees-derived nougat and ground pistachio/almond/roasted chestnut. Scents of deconstructed crème brûlée ‘(flamed top and custardy middle), enhanced by ripe white nectarine and peach fruits. A liberal sprinkle of crushed rock/pebble dust (quartz, limestone?) certainly adds interest. Palate: A very lively palate of freshly sliced cucumber and lime citrus flavours hovering over a soft and succulent acid underpinning. A tight phenolic grip induces wonderful length and drive to the finish. A cool climate regional trio – three different chardonnay expressions of texture/acidity/tightness/purity coalesce, propelling combined fruits/flavours. A ‘new Bin 311’ is revealed. Nice.

Alcohol Volume: 12.50%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 7.4

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Multi-Regional Blend

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Grange750mL Bottle, $1,300.00
NOSE: Unmistakably, it is what it is. In a word, Grange. (Almost) all unleashed immediately upon the first splash into the glass – exuberant, lifted, flamboyant. An aromatic ‘multi-cultural’ chromatogram brazenly unfolds: First, enticing barrel ferment formics and balsamics, spliced with soy, tomato puree, black olive and liquorice (Dutch?). Then, the exotics - wafts of tiramisu/mascarpone/zabaglione (Italy?), replete with freshly roasted hazelnut and ground coffee beans (Kenya?) 30 seconds later… PALATE: Fresh and refined. Nervy. Red liquorice, gravy reduction flavours and black olive tapenade to the fore. And then, just so much more! Where to start? Compelling depth - weighty/voluminous/fleshy - structurally complete and even throughout. A radiant inner sheen, yet still assertive – a film encrusted with dusty, softened tannins that coat tongue. Great length. A loss of innocence, as sculptured oak (purity/clean) and a boundless array of red fruits, congeal into a darkened pool of (un)known and (un)savoury delights! Unashamedly and quite blatantly THE wine of this year’s Penfolds 2016 new releases! Enough said.

Alcohol Volume: 14.00%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 8.6

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Multi-Regional Blend

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Grange750mL Bottle, $1,300.00
Nose: An aromatic assault / surge / eruption of soy, hoisin, balsamic reduction… coiled around a core of kirsch and fresh raspberry. This propulsion is crammed with tell-tale barrel ferment, V.A. and formic Grange markers – all in balance, all respectful of fruit and oak. And yet, so ‘classy’ – a brightness, a sheen, a gloss, a raciness – belying both age and upbringing (élevage). Palate: Formidable! No gaps, a densely-packed structural continuum. Not huge, not massive, yet taut, muscular, feisty. A black palimpsest - black fruits, black liquorice, black pudding, black fig, black cardamom.... Granitic chewy tannins linger and coat; oak all but fully concealed, submerged beneath a tannin/oak/acid/flavour tsunami. Fruits? Where to start in this entanglement? Time please.

Alcohol Volume: 14.50%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 8.6

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Multi-Regional Blend

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Grange750mL Bottle, $950.00
NOSE: An indulged aromatic meander: First in the kitchen – umami expressed primarily via wafts of shiitake mushroom stock, hoisin and XO sauce … enhancing scents of dry-aged beef and game meats. Then outside – olive-leaf, cardamom, sage and thyme … “a stroll through a South Australian olive grove” … saltbush, acacia, dried and dusty bracken. To the cellar – fresh and familial lifted formic and barrel-ferment nuances. Followed by a return to reality: Quite simply, an unmistakable youthful ‘Grange’ nose. Awakened primary fruits and stylish oak interlocked and indistinguishable. As expected. PALATE: Savoury, not fruity. Tastes/flavours remind of slow cooked beef ragout, chicken liver game terrine. Red liquorice also apparent. Integrated oak – spicy, almost ‘non-American’ oak … but it is. As it always is. A core of 100% new Quercus alba. Poised yet powerful. A balanced, tightly-knit and woven structural ‘tapestry’. Not to be constrained by dimension or frame. Tannins with attitude! Nonetheless respectful. Type? Slatey tannins … alluvial, silty (certainly not muddy!). Long and lingering – tactile impressions indistinguishably and slowly fuse/merge into an aftertaste memory. Until the next sip! A Grange to create new friends – this 2014 offering a subtly different structural mosaic; different tone and timbre.

Alcohol Volume: 14.50%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 8.6

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: Multi-Regional Blend

Vintage: Vintages Vary
Penfolds Max's Cabernet Sauvignon 750mL Bottle, $27.00
Blackberry and dark red cherry fruits follow onto the palate. An enticing, savoury profile. Cranberry and pomegranate succulence helps provide a sweet/sour dynamic. A combination of American and French oak offers a sweet char nuance. The oak doesn’t poke out or linger, rather sitting supportively with the fruit. The structural tannins are fine and grainy helping to drive the finish. The palate lingers from the delicious dense fruit and bracing tannins.

Alcohol Volume: 14.50%

Pack Format: Bottle

Standard Drinks: 8.6

Pack Type: Bottle

Country of Origin: Australia

Region: South Australia

Vintage: Vintages Vary
