‘Clémentine’ is our Woodlands Brook Vineyard Cabernet blend. Produced since 2015, the wine takes its name from Andrew and Marie’s daughter; and much like that lovely little girl we love and are getting to know, over time we’re learning more about this site. The Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot were already planted when we purchased the vineyard in 2008. Close planted, spur pruned, and in need of a little TLC, the wines produced initially were tannic. Over the years we have been converting the plots to cane pruning to soften the tannins, and create a more balanced canopy and fruit set. We planted the Cabernet Sauvignon in a gravelly meadow of Woodlands Brook in 2009, and these vines were brought up cane pruned and unirrigated. Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines. The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of ‘Margaret’ come from Woodlands’ west-facing slope of deep loam soil. The greatest vintage of this wine we have ever produced. The 2018 growing season was absolutely ideal, and will certainly go down in history as one of Margaret River’s greatest. The palate is seamless and integrated, and very dense and powerful. Waves of soft ripe fruits combine with the array of ripe velvety tannins, finishing with lively acidity. Extremely expressive from beginning to end – seamless, dense, and beautifully powerful. The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from four vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The Shiraz comes from vineyards of varying age, with the oldest planted in 1925. These blocks are of sandy loam, featuring yellow sand and ochre clay over red clay.
